Hi everybody,

As you know, we have been a week behind schedule because of the bad weather in January and February but we fix that tomorrow, getting back on plan by skipping what was originally intended to be last week's walk. We have walked all parts of tomorrow's walk before, but not on the same day!

Tomorrow's stroll starts out from Clonkeen Wood at 7:15 so we should aim to meet there no later than 7:00. We climb up to Art's Lough and on to Clohernagh, down to the Carrawaystick Brook, up the side of Carrawaystick, over to Carraig na Sliogan and down to the bottom of the South Prison where we take our first break. From there, it is up to Lug and over to the Glen of Imaal via Slieve Maan, Ballinedden and the ford over the Little Slaney before going back up to Lug where we will take our second break, weather permitting. From there, it is over towards Clohernagh but we will drop down to the Carrawaystick Brook en route (and if we have not already done so, we will take our second break there) before climbing to the top of Clohernagh and then back down to the cars. We will have done very well if we are back to the cars by 6:30 - 7pm might be a more realistic expectation.

This walk involves over 2,320m of height gain so we are right on the money in that respect - Maamturks = 2336m but tomorrow's walk is 6Km longer!

The weather is due to be a bit more challenging than last week: it will be cloudy for most of the day, with sleet at times driven by winds in excess of 50Km per hour and temperatures will be at or below freezing - it will certainly feel like its freezing all day (until we reach the sanctuary of the Glenmalure Lodge - or perhaps Lynham's, assuming the roads are driveable!).

The following week, we do a very similar walk: the only difference is that we go back up to Carraig na Sliogan on the way back, to get a little extra height gain and a more demanding descent down to the Carrawaystick Brook. That walk gives slightly more height gain than the Maamturks and doing two similar walks back to back (i.e. tomorrow's and the following week's) will give everybody a very good idea of how we are fixed: you'll be able to compare how badly you feel on successive weeks as you cover the same ground, while hopefully drawing some consolation from knowing that it is at least as demanding as the Maamturks, if not more so.

If anyone still feels like doing this, I'll be in Roundwood at 6:30!!
