Hi everybody,

Next Saturday we do the last of the introductory walks in the schedule: less than 2100m. of height gain and only 31Km of lateral distance. Once we have that out of the way, the remaining walks will be more or less similar to the Maamturks, each being longer in distance than the Maamturks and having at least 2200m of height gain. With one exception, the remaining walks are also variations of this Saturday's walk: all the more reason to pay attention on Saturday!

The plan this Saturday is to start walking at 7:30 from Clonkeen Woods where we met and parked last week - 7:30 is the same start time provided for in the training plan, although we are doing a different walk as we are still one week behind the plan. We will need to arrive at Clonkeen ten or fifteen minutes earlier than last week (say at 7:15) in order to start the walk at 7:30. There is no car split this week - we start and finish at Clonkeen Wood - so we do not need to bring all the cars into Glenmalure. I plan to pass through Roundwood at 6:50 if anyone wishes to meet up there.

So, the proposal is that we set out from the entrance to Clonkeen Wood and climb up to Art's Lough and on to Clohernagh: this is about 640m. of height gain in one go at the very start of the walk. It is broadly equivalent to the start of the Maamturks where we climb Corcóg Mór: that is about 514m. in height gain but over a much shorter (and therefore more demanding) distance of 2Km vs. 6Km.

>From Clohernagh, we drop down to the Carrawaystick Brook (from where we turned up Clohernagh to home last Saturday) and then climb the side of Carrawaystick and go across to Carraig na Sliogan (Corrigasleggaun) and then down to the South Prison, where we take our first break before climbing up to Lug (come hell, snow, ice or high water!). From there, we do what is now our usual loop across to Slievemaan and Ballineddan, across the Little Slaney and back up Camara Hill to Lug for a second time, where we will take our second break. After that, it is directly over to Clohernagh, down to the cars and into the Glenmalure Lodge to see if Daffodil Girl and her friends are still there!

As of now, the weather looks like being a little more clement than recently: cloudy rather than out-and-out rain or sleet and light winds, although we will be at a high altitude for most of the day so we may end up walking in murk for much of the time.
