Catalytic Converter
Converter is an electric device that can convert electrical energy. Catalytic converter used in vehicle as a discharge controlled device that helps to lessen the emission of air pollutants like carbon monoxide, uncombusted hydrocarbon and oxides of nitrogen which are the main pollutants of air.
In the year 1950 a French mechanical engineer named Eugene Houdry invented Catalytic Converter. At first Houdry invented catalytic converter for smoke stack. After researching he updated it for gasoline engine that can be used in cars, trucks etc. For his tremendous contribution he was awarded United Stated Patent. After Eugene Houdry some well known engineer named John J. Mooney and Carl D. Keith developed catalytic converter and helped to create first production of catalytic converter in 1973.
There are two types of Catalytic converter. Two Way or oxidation and Three Way. Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide to carbon dioxide and oxidation of hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water are the two simultaneous tasks of Two way catalytic converter. On the other and Three way catalytic converter has three simultaneous tasks. Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen, Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and Oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water. Thus Two way and Three way catalytic conveter works.
Because of the inability of controlling oxides of Nitrogen in two way catalytic converter American and Canadian automobile companies decided to replace by three way catalytic converter in the year of 1981.
