Training for Maamturks Challenge Week 8 Barravore-Fraughan Rock-Lug-Slievemaan-Ballineddan-Little Slaney-Camara-Clohernagh-Lug South Prison
Leaders letter
Hi everybody,
Next Saturday's walk is similar to the one we did two weeks ago when we climbed Lug twice. However, in view of the whinging and moaning about the inadequacy of that walk - lack of snow, insufficient depth & hardness of ice, boring movie material - next Saturday we'll climb Lug three times: once from the east, once from the west and once from the south - that'll learn ye!!
We start out from Barravore at 7.45am, up Fraughan Rock and on to Lug, across to Slievemaan and Ballineddan, down to the Little Slaney and then up Camara to Lug for the second time, from where we go out towards Clohernagh before dropping down to climb up the South Prison to see Lug for the third time, then back out to Clohernagh, down to Art's Lough and back to the glen via Clonkeen Woods. It is 30Km in distance, involves some 1880m of height gain and should take about ten hours.
This is 3Km or 4Km longer than the Maamturks but has "only" three quarters of the height gain. That will give you an idea of where we are: we have a bit to go to be fully "match fit" but nevertheless, next Saturday's is a big walk and we could not have contemplated taking this on before we started into the training. You can test this by telling people you are planning to climb Lug three times on Saturday and see the reaction!
The plan is to start walking from Barravore at 7.45a.m. This is the same start time advertised in the schedule for this date i.e. earlier than our start time of two weeks ago but we are still one week behind schedule i.e. had things gone to plan, we would be doing a tougher walk this Saturday.
In order avoid a road walk at the end, we will leave one or two cars at the entrance to Clonkeen Woods where we parked last Saturday week, adjacent to and on the opposite side of the road to the Ballinafunshoge Car Park. We can arrange the car split on Saturday morning as everybody has to pass that spot on the way to Barravore. Please arrive at Ballinafunshogue / Clonkeen no later than 7.30 or even earlier so that we can be ready to go up to Barravore and start walking at 7.45.
It is too early to predict the weather with any accuracy but the long-range forecast as of now is dry and not excessively hot! I will pass through Roundwood at 7.00 if anyone wishes to travel from there with me.
See you then, |
